I wrote a... fan-recipe? Truly no self control here if we're at the point where a fictional sandwich can take over my brain. Anyway thank you Aabria Iyengar for mashing together my grandmother's favourite summer starter of melon & cured ham and the revelation that was Austrian Tafelspitz marrow on toast.
Check out the winter-summer sandwich rendered by the Messrs. Callum magic cookbots' hivemind here:

Chapter 13
“How’s my mom?”
Pearl grimaced and wrapped her arms around herself again. There was none of her usual sneering confidence as she said, “Physically she’s fine. Marrow really is acting like she’s an important guest and ally. But she doesn’t seem to get it comes with strings, or that she’s basically his prisoner.”
I’m not even surprised. Somebody stupid enough to get themselves into this situation would 100% think this, yes.
“But you heard that woman with Holland. If I’m still a void – or call it what you want – then she won’t be the last one to look at you differently.”
I thought that we’d already established that there’s no such thing as “voids”, only people who shift into different animals other than wolves.
All of this trouble with the Marrow pack was because of me, after all. It was my grandfather who snatched our people up like they were pieces on his game board.
How the hell does she go from “this was all my fault” to springboarding from the ACTUAL problem?
Of course, I could have waited until after the great morning sex before I hit him with that viewpoint, couldn’t I?
Chapter 13 summary: Pearl explains that, since they are literal children, even Johnathan is getting a little fed up with their endless energy. Pearl told him that she was going to take the children “for a walk”. They made it to the boundary of the Marrow estate before guards set down on Reed. He led them away simply so that Pearl could escape with the twins. Marnie is angry over the entire thing seeing as how they’re due to be mated and everything. But Jasper is of the opinion “You all did what you needed to do in order to rescue my brothers. Reed is trained for this; he’ll be okay.”
Vail goes to her shared bedroom with Jasper, where she transforms into a cat and snuggles up with one of Jasper’s hoodies. Jasper comes in with his brothers, who share more images with Vail. Despite the fact that she’s now a cat and they’re wolves, the cat enjoys the babies. The four of them snuggle up together to sleep.
In the morning, things start to get a little hot and heavy between them. But then Jasper remembers his brothers are supposed to be there, and Vail grumbles that he should have waited until after sex.
Chapter 14
“You knew about her all along, but you never told me. I get that you couldn’t, because of the pact with my dad, but there was time for you to tell me before you bit me. And then you had Callum bring me to you, shit scared and completely confused. Maybe you thought that was okay because you’d known about me for most of your life, and you just assumed this is how things were going to be between us. But it was all news to me. And instead of giving me time to work through it, you took what you wanted. You didn’t stop to think if my cat wanted you back, Trey.”
YES GIRL. CALL HIM THE FUCK OUT.
“You didn’t stop to think if my cat wanted you back, Trey.”
“She does,” he said through gritted teeth. “You do as well, only you won’t admit it.”
I was already shaking my head. “You’re wrong. Jasper’s the only mate I’ve ever wanted.”
“Too bad,” he snarled, grabbing my wrist. “We’re mated, and you can’t change that now.”
Why is this coming off as “he’s mansplaining her feelings to her”?
“Everything I’ve done has been to keep you safe.”
Ah yes. Leaving her with a man who turned around and sold her to the highest bidder was 100% keeping her safe!
I sniffed. “Okay, dad. Just hurry home.”
Chapter 14 summary: As Vail eats breakfast, two random dudes come over and tell Vail that they’re basically her personal assistants-slash-bodyguards. That they’re eager to please her by doing whatever she wants. Vail then stands up and announces to EVERYBODY in the dining hall at that time that she wants to decorate for Christmas in an effort to cheer everybody up. So her two assistants eagerly leave to go find a tree.
Vail leaves the caves with the twins in order to let them run off some energy. However, as she’s loping around with them in her cat form, Trey joins her. He runs with them for a little bit before he transforms back and tells Vail to do the same. However, her cat has a mind of its own, and refuses to listen. She’s also so powerful that Trey using the cat version of “alpha power” to force a shift no longer works. Not since Vail took control over the cat side of her.
Anyway, after a moment, Vail does shift back, and she calls Trey out on his shit. That he’s been lying and manipulating her for as long as she can remember. She wants nothing to do with him… Full stop.
She meets back up with her two gophers as they come back with the tree, so she and the twins go back to the caves. However, as people come together to start decorating things, Vail gets a call from her father. Her actual father.
He obviously warns her to stay away from the Marrow estate, full stop. But then goes on to say all of this stuff about “it was all to protect you” and “your mother wanted you to grow up feeling loved”. None of which actually happened for Vail, thank you kindly.

I like your taste with How I'd Kill, a lovely tune.
Last Song: Cadmium Colors, by Jamie Paige (I hadn't actually watched the video for it till now, it's fantastic i love it so much)
Last Book: Annihilation, by Jeff Vandermeer. Highly recommended, though I more often read other writing. Been diving back into SCP recently.
Last TV Series: I rarely watch shows. Re-watched Cyberpunk Edgerunners a while back, but the last new series I completely finished was... Murder Drones, I think. I honestly have no clue.
Sweet/Savory/Spicy: Spicy more often than not, though all three are great.
Relationship Status: Not looking for one at the moment.
Last Google Search: ROR2 Host Skip
Looking Forward To: Oh so many things! Mostly art/media.
Includes but is not limited to:
The Gaslight District & Knights of Guinevere, Season 2 of Dorohedoro, this continued animation renaissance,
Silksong, Subnautica 2
making more dandelion wine
reading Callum Stephen Diggle's Humanity Lost in its entirety someday (and his upcoming project Concavia!! both are on his patreon its like one dollar a month and the quality is insane. gorgeous artwork and stories, check him out!)
reading Rounderhouse's Bone Proposal
the chance that maybe Guns Pointed at the Head of God will get its next step (its been years but I can dream)
qntm's publishing deal for There Is No Antimemetics Division going through
completing various writing projects (definitely, probably, this time for real, i think, who knows)
various kickstarter projects coming up and coming in
listening to a cassette tape whose contents i am wholly unaware of
and the months of February & April (hopefully).
Current Obsession: KK-507 (from this SCP story, specifically sections YELLOW and GREEN) has been living rent free in my bone marrow for the past ~18 hours. I have a soft spot for such characters, even if they aren't immensely fleshed out.
Just leaves room for you to fill in the gaps, and even then they're more fascinating when they're still a bit unknown. Like how the stars twinkle a little less once you learn that it's just their light refracting through the atmosphere.
Thanks for the impromptu introspection @clever-naming-convention.
People I'd like to know better: tag game
Tagged by @biscuit-o here (thank you!! Putting this in a separate post to spare our followers the extremely long thread, lol)
Last song: ♍ - Let Me Dance, Let Me Glisten (by Flutterwhat (James Fischer))
Last book: Technically The Wheel of Time 4 - The Shadow Rising, but we're always working through like, five books at any given time.
Last tv show: The White Lotus courtesy of partners. I have no idea what's going on in there. Lol.
Sweet/savory/spicy: Savoury.
Relationship status: Happily partnered with @inseparabiles <3
Last thing i googled: Not counting things I googled for this post, "générique bob le bricoleur"
Looking forward to: Tonight's writing sprints with friend, and Saturday's movie date with partners.
Current obsession: Coming as a surprise to absolutely nobody, Death Note and specifically MelloNear.
Tagging the last 9 people in our notes for this:
@angurgapi, @lasalebete (DIFFERENT tag game than the one you tagged us in, lol. Will do yours in a bit, I have to go to dinner now!), @astrolesbean, @willowcatkinblog, @dem-bones, @cheesyygarlicbread, @somapodra, @inseparabiles (I know you and love you but you can do this anyway. Mwah. <3), @demonic-mnemonic

@whump-it And here’s one for their future house! Completely with cozy living room and kitchen! (very important rooms). The all-important house keys make an appearance (they all have one), as does a notebook (either Alyaa’s or Callum’s!), and the oil difuser (spreading whichever sent Callum and Alyaa decided on for the day). The verse is one of my favorites and I think perfectly describes what these three have gone through and become.

Are there any dead/retired Mob Ops? For the Ace Ops, we know Tortuga was dead, and I suspect Clover and Marrow once had partners (a fish for Clover and a reflection for Marrow).
I did have a bit of a recurring joke that there are some retired/inactive members of the Mob Ops based on other birds in the poem they're based on.
Iirc there was Dove Brenner (The Dove), Donald "Don" Harrier (who despite his name was based on The Bullfinch), Florence Roth (The Nightingale), and Callum Blackwood (The Owl).

Raheem Sterling has become a role model for his young England team-mates
The impact of Raheem Sterling was felt long before the start of Friday in Wembley on another night when his star shone brightly. These days it's more than just football.
Friday brought a second hat trick of the month, seeing his goal-scoring skill and ruthlessness in the stadium where he grew up and looking at rebuilt – but something else had been noticed in the tunnel.
At the back of England & # 39; s line waiting to go out was Sterling, animated chatting with two young men taking advantage of his experiences – good and bad. Callum Hudson-Odoi and Jadon Sancho were fooled with Manchester City, joking and giggling, talking about what might unfold against the Czech Republic.
The rise of Raheem Sterling has seen him as one of the best players in the English team. "

The teenagers are relaxed, comfortable in the company from Sterling. The couple, who left with memories in northern London – the promising first competitive international start for the Sancho and Hudson-Odoi debut – remain with Sterling & # 39; s word. That Sancho has never been far from Sterling & # 39; s side in St George & # 39; s Park in recent days has not gone unnoticed.
There is no doubt that Sterling has become a recognizable icon, although he still finds it surreal that he has such an impact on these young careers. Anyway, with 48 caps, he is the newest member of the & # 39; leading group & # 39; of Gareth Southgate and is said to have that role, although he offers wisdom to those who do not want it for him.
Sancho
Sterling, 24, even sent an encouraging text to Mason Greenwood, 17, to Manchester United after his breakthrough in training the first team with the city's rivals
Forget Sterling's goals and statistics for a minute; these are also real signs of their growth to a seasoned professional – someone who is not until December 25.

Sancho in particular may relate to the journey of Sterling. Both left disadvantaged parts of the capital during their teenage years.
With the increased duration, Sterling's figures have improved over the past year.
Another message he tells the children is to ignore bad luck or unjustified criticism.
Supporters shuddered Sterling & # 39; s indecision at Wembley against Slovenia a month later, October 2017, with moans from
The vitriol to Sterling became so intense, and he was noticeable on Premier League- grounds up and down the country that teammate Kevin De Bruyne jumped to his defense.

Sterling was affected by negativity
City and Pep Guardiola worked on his self-confidence and some of them reduced his time on social media.
Sterling used to break the criticism.
He uses his time wisely and only comes out occasionally. He was spotted at the Twenty Twenty Two underground table tennis bar in Manchester & # 39; s Northern Quarter. Sterling goes away from the crowds, and only with his sizes. He took it very seriously.

The competitive advantage was also there when I was on a free Day at University College Hospital traveled with his fiancee Paige and his family to visit Damary Dawkins, the 13-year-old who paid
During a tight game of pool between the couple, Sterling exaggerated a jovial character behind the scenes, are celebrations to cheer Damary for the photographer of Sportsmail. & # 39; We have never seen Damary so excited & & # 39 ;, one spectator said. The couple had and thought he had found a bone marrow donor, but there was no match and Damary died last Sunday.
I've never seen anything like this before, but I don't know what to do.

Sterling unveiled a T-shirt in the honor of Damary after scoring on Friday. & # 39; It was very, very moving and fitting, I know Damian touched his heart & # 39 ;, said his father Tony Dawkins.
Even more moving that it arrived at the new Wembley. Sterling is growing synonymous with the stadium and was even within the age of 12, for its first FA Cup final in 2007, when Chelsea defeated Manchester United. Guardiola & # 39; s side continues to hunt for four trophies.
His intelligence and movement of the ball have improved – partly to Guardiola, partly to Mikel Arteta's training sessions after closing time and partly to Sterling's mini-arena in his backyard. He no longer survives for his purpose.
& # 39; Catch me on the back pole & # 39 ;, could be his motto, with so many goals coming when he taps into low crosses.
Those words of wisdom that have been put into the tunnel from the English Pied Piper appear to be mutually beneficial
Raheem Sterling & # 39; s tribute to field to a youth player who died of leukemia was a & # 39; pleasant surprise & # 39; for the family, the boy's father said last night.
Damary Dawkins died last Sunday, despite having a stem cell transplant shortly before Christmas. The 13-year-old, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at the age of nine, played on the Crystal Palace development team.
On Friday in Wembley, Sterling lifted up his sweater after scoring his score. second goal in the England game against the Czech Republic to reveal a photo of him and Damary.
Damary's father, Tony Dawkins, said: “It was a pleasant surprise. When Crystal Palace played Manchester City, Damary put on his training suit with the Crystal Palace and took a photo to send to Raheem.
Damary had chemotherapy after his diagnosis, but after a relapse in 2018, his family was advised that he needed a donor.
Tony Dawkins thanked the African Caribbean Leukemia Trust for supporting the family. The GoFundMe page set to help the family with funeral expenses has received more than £ 3000 after Sterling & # 39; s moving tribute. Donate to Damary & # 39; s GoFundMe Page Visit

Dive into the Pink Announces Second Annual Photo Competition Winners
Nonprofit organization Dive into the Pink announced the winners of the Think Pink photo competition on August 6th. The competition, organized by Dive into the Pink, invited photographers to submit their most exciting images featuring the color pink, with proceeds used to support the fight against breast cancer.
We had a fantastic response again this year, with almost 400 entries raising well over $3,000 for breast-cancer research and patient support. The quality of the entries was exceptionally high, and the judging panel had an incredibly tough time picking the winners, finally awarding first place in the Macro category to Henley Spiers’s blenny peeping from a sponge and first place in the wide-angle category to Eduardo Arribada’s diver surrounded by schooling fish. Spiers won a six-day package to Crystal Blue Resort in Anilao, Philippines, and Arribada will receive a six-day Visayas Safari aboard MV Discovery Palawan, Philippines. Scoring second place spots, Fabien Michenet won an AOI 12.5x diopter with flip-thread adapter for an image of a shrimp on a jellyfish in the macro category, while Víctor Núñez won a Kraken Sports Hydra 3500 lumen light for a perfectly posed over-under of a mermaid.
The third-place finishers are Massimo Giorgetta for his crisp candy crab and Ron Watkins for his scorpionfish perched on a sponge. Each took home a $250 gift certificate towards Saga Dive products. The judges also felt that Elly Wray and David Antoja Mas deserved honorable mentions, and they were awarded a copy of Blackwater and Open Blue by Scott “Gutsy” Tuason, and Secrets of the Seas by Alex Mustard and Callum Roberts, respectively.
Winning images will help promote the third annual Pink Auction, a silent online auction that kicks off on September 30, 2018. Items up for bid include exotic dive trips, dive gear, underwater photography gear, jewelry, and apparel. Auction items are still being added and readers can preview them here.
About Dive into the Pink
Allison Vitsky Sallmon, a breast cancer survivor, veteran scuba diver, and underwater photographer, founded Dive into the Pink in 2016. She wanted to raise money to fight cancer by mobilizing the scuba community through dive charters and dive-related activities. Dive into the Pink is a 501c3 organization, and 100 percent of proceeds are redistributed. Beneficiaries include the Young Survival Coalition (YSC), an international organization dedicated to the critical issues of young women with breast cancer, and the Guise Laboratory at Indiana University, which is investigating whether certain characteristics of the bone-marrow microenvironment can alter/promote the spread of cancer to the bone.

Chapter 1
Like the fact I was a wolf-panther hybrid, had been kidnapped by Callum Sawyer, and during a wind-swept outing with the Devil of the Horn, had stupidly bitten him and claimed him as a mate.
I’m still a little convinced that it was a bit forced.
Turning eighteen was a big deal in the shifter world, and my grandfather had made it clear for some time that he intended to claim me in some way before then.
What a funny coincidence that werewolves and humans happen to celebrate the same sort of legal milestone!
I am once again asking an ever important question: when you are a writer, you can write whatever the hell you want. So why has the author chosen to write it like this?
They were parked next to a warehouse, and I was surprised to find the camera pointed at Mr. Wentworth, my academy math teacher. He was dressed in his usual immaculate suit, but where his light gray eyes had once seemed dreamy, they now just looked haunted. Someone else in the cab was talking to him and he gave a quick nod before swinging out of the door. “He’s a spy for your grandfather,” Jasper said quietly. “He’s the only one who can walk in there without being questioned.”
My heart clenched at this new blow. Mr. Wentworth was a spy?
Considering everything that Mr. W told her in the previous book… I think that there’s this whole other side of things that the wolves simply don’t know about (/refuse to acknowledge). I feel like that’s exactly what’s going on here.
Is Mr. W a spy? Or is he simply meeting up with more werebirds? AKA his family.
Reed swore softly behind me. “Pearl, what the hell are you up to?”
Chapter 1 summary: Most of this chapter is simply a rehash of everything that’s been going on up until now. Maybe it would have been different if it had been a year-plus between reading Book 3 and this… But it’s only been a few months. This is tedious and annoying.
Anyway, Vail wakes up and goes into the war room, where the important males are. They report that they haven’t been able to find Cal after he ran off… After it came out that he was also a wolf-cat hybrid like Vail is. However, I feel like he isn’t important, so I’m not too worried about him right now.
The main problem is going to be finally resolving the nonsense with Vail’s grandfather. Finally. Jasper shows Vail the invite to the party, as well as a note from his mother. Basically, she’s manipulating her son into the position that she wants… So nothing new at all. Vail is angry, but I’m not sure why, since again. This isn’t new info.
They also show that they’ve been following Mr. W, and they watch as he enters the Marrow compound. Then everybody is totally shocked when Pearl shows up at the compound as well.
Chapter 2
“Deportment is for omegas,” Pearl replied with a sneer…
Maybe you’d have more friends if you attended deportment lessons.
“If your grandfather wants you for anything, it’s to breed you to one of his old cronies.” She crossed her long legs and cocked a silky brow. “My advice? Use the little you have. Everyone knows Marrow wants an heir, and the fastest way for him to get one is to breed his young, fertile granddaughter.”
Except from Pearl’s perspective, Vail is still classified as a dud. Why would she be encouraging a dud to breed?
My cat might have some complex feelings about wolves, but she was a sucker for puppy voodoo, same as me.
It’s not the “puppy voodoo”, but rather BABIES. I’ll bet that any shifter would have the same reaction around any sort of baby, no matter the species of the baby.
“Right now, they’re hostages. They have value to him because they’re a link to you and the Clan Alpha. But he also has Jay’s mom. That’s three guarantees that you’ll do exactly what he wants.”
Boy is grandpa going to be in for a shock when Jasper refuses to do anything about his mum.
Jasper snorted and kissed my nose. “Go kick his ass, pretty wolf.”
Chapter 2 summary: They later haul Pearl into the clan caves. Vail wants to go in and talk to her, but Jasper disagrees. Eventually, Vail wins with her argument that Pearl still thinks that Vail is not only trash, but also a dud. She’d probably let slip something that she wouldn’t with anybody else… If only because she’d like to rub it into Vail’s face.
So Vail goes in, and Pearl is like “Ugh, yeah. Jasper’s little brothers were in there. They were crying and shit. So what?” But then an enforcer comes in and Vail makes Pearl indicate where Gwen was with her cubs. Vail drops the fact that she’s now the clan Luna before she bounces.
Outside, she talks with Jasper about how they’re going to get his brothers back. However, he’s worried about anything Marrow will pull. The word on the street is that Marrow is planning to make a huge announcement about the future of his clan at this party. And I think that they’re both under the impression that it’s going to be about breeding Vail off to somebody.

Chapter 3
As soon as I was away from the academy, any connections I’d made here would be meaningless.
That’s honestly school in a nutshell.
Since the math teacher had returned to Ireland…
[...]
It was a pretty set, with a teapot and matching sugar bowl. When I’d commented on it, he’d told me he would compromise on a lot of things, but never tea. And yet he’d left this behind.
1) First off, bold of you to assume that he went back willingly
2) Weird of you to think that they wouldn’t have any tea in Ireland. Have you ever met an Irishman who wasn’t nuts about tea?
“If you’re in trouble, you should talk to your Clan Alpha. No matter what’s happened between you, he has a responsibility to help you.”
Full offence, but his help has only led to Vail being in worsening trouble.
Which alpha, you ask? Literally all of them. They’re all shit. Every single one of them without redemption.
I pulled away and shook my head at him. “Been there, and have the tracker scar to prove it.”
Chapter 3 summary: Callum is quick to leave to go continue fucking his MILF, Tily. I am once again asking what Callum is getting from any of this if it’s not fucking Vail.
Anyway, she mopes around for a bit, before she wanders to the dud dorm. There, the duds all but laugh at her after she “chose” Callum… Apparently the thought of being forced is beyond them. She goes to the nurse’s office, where the nurse tells her that the alpha has been going around and healing people. The attackers used tranquillisers, so nobody was actually killed, but there were some injuries.
Vail then randomly goes to Mr. Wentworth’s office, and is surprised to find him there. She thought that he’d gone back to Ireland. He says all of this stuff about wishing that he’d known how shit would have turned out the night he handed Vail over to Trey, but like… If you actually gave a shit about her, I feel like he would be working endlessly to get her out from this rapist factory.
Anyway, he keeps hammering on how “the alpha can protect you. Go seek guidance from the alpha!” But to Vail, that’s like saying “It’s only a little bit of a bullet to the brain! Go back to the people who put it there in the first place!” She’s naturally like “No thanks.”
Chapter 4
“You’re going to leave?” Nadia looked horrified. “Vail, you can’t! The last time you went home, the Black Den Pack almost killed you!”
Jasmine’s nod was so vigorous, it sent her blonde curls flying. “Not to mention the fact they’re still sweeping bits of fur off the front steps!”
It hasn’t even been a full day since it happened!
“I’m sorry, Vail. I really love you like a sister, which is why I have to tell Jasper about this.”
Her confession felt like a blow. I tried to tell myself it wasn’t a betrayal. She really believed Jasper Arras was the only one who could help me.
The stupidest part about this is that she witnessed the events of the second book. She saw the way that Jasper had literally shackled Vail.
AND SHE STILL FUCKING THINKS THAT JASPER IS THE SOLUTION TO ALL OF VAIL’S PROBLEMS.
“Um. No.” I took the slip of paper from my pocket and checked the name. “Mr. Wentworth said to try here…”
[...]
“Information on voids. Mr. Wentworth loaned me a book by Laurence Marrow, and I was hoping for something similar.”
The other librarian was on the computer, but her glance was sharp. “We don’t stock books like that. If you have questions about cursed wolves, you should ask your teachers.”
I shouldn’t even be surprised that the librarians at this cursed school are fucking terrible at their jobs, and have zero listening comprehension.
“But there are others? You’ve met shifters that weren’t wolves?”
“That’s what a void is, Vail,” he said gently. “Just a different kind of shifter.”
You’ve got to be shitting me right now.
Except our audience was male, had eyes like blue flames, and was bristling with an alpha power I could feel through the door.
Chapter 4 summary: Vail sulks around the dud break room because she doesn’t know what else to do with her life. Eventually, her friends find her, and Vail tells them that she has to get in contact with Darkness. That this will magically make everything better. Newly minted alpha Marnie doesn’t view going against the pack as a good thing, and warns that she’s going to tell Jasper about anything Vail does. So much for that friendship. The omegas convince her to help Vail to escape, but I’m not sure that I’d trust her after that.
Vail then goes to the library, since Mr. Wentworth had given her instructions to do so. Once there, she finds out that Theo Grille isn’t an author, but one of the school librarians. He takes her into a room full of rare books, and then does a partial shift: he’s a werefalcon.
Theo explains to her that voids are only non-wolf shifters. Things that the wolves refuse to acknowledge or even pretend like they understand today. A long time ago, there used to be six different families, each with their own animal and territory in Europe. Now, the other 5 houses have been hunted to near extinction because the werewolves craved power that much. The entire thing basically boils down to racism.
Theo’s own story is basically that he was once in Vail’s shoes. He was labelled a dud when he first came to the school, and was eventually bumped up to omega status. But his mother helped him to uncover who and what he actually is. The only way he knows how to survive is to keep his head down in the middle of the werewolves, which I guess is as good of a play as any. He’s also not an omega in the werefalcon circles; the different families have different ranking systems.
At the end of this, as Vail is thanking him for this info, she looks up and sees an alpha. Considering that the next chapter is from Jasper’s POV, I’m pretty sure that it’s him.

Chapter 37
“I have friends there. And while I appreciate getting free of the collar, I can’t go with you.”
JFC. She’s been doing everything in her power to get away from this shit. But now that the time has come, she’s like “wait, but my friends!!!”????
“Jesus, little Marrow. They collar your wolf and bug your ass, and you’re still calling them your friends?”
In their defence, they’re the ones who were the most upset over Jasper’s treatment of Vail. 100% of what happened to Vail can be pointed back to Jasper.
Callum’s hot breath scorched my ear. “Your pussy’s now mine, Little Freak.”
Chapter 37 summary: The mysterious person ended up being Sin, who was the last person I expected. She drags Vail further away and then uses some sort of master key to unlock the collar. Vail instantly feels better, and Sin explains to her that the only thing the collar does is to keep the wolf locked up.
Sin then says that they have to go. That there’s something called a Skin King coming, and they don’t want to be around to see that. However, Vail is upset at the thought of the thing coming to the school, seeing as how her friends are here. And despite all of the shit that happened to her, I guess it would be bad if people like Marnie and Nadia were killed simply because they were in the path of this Skin King. (No, this is never fucking explained.)
Upon hearing about the tracker, Sin forces Vail to the ground and removes that too. Right as they’re getting up, they come face to face with the same men who’d chased Vail at the start of the book. They have tranquilliser guns, and Sin tells Vail to run. She goes, but comes face to face with another pack, who still think that they’re playing a game.
What happens next is another example of how vague and poorly-written that this stupid series is. I think that Vail transforms, but I don’t even fucking know anymore. She runs around a lot, and ends up hiding in a tree. When she finally comes down, she finds that there was a literal slaughter.
That’s how Callum finds her. And then, completely and utterly ignoring the carnage around them, Callum is basically like “I’m going to rape you.” What a lovely fellow.
Chapter 38
“Clan Alpha, Alphason Reed. Callum Sawyer has claimed me as his mate,” she said, her voice hollow, but also without a hint of a lie. “With your blessing, I’m now the Luna-in-Waiting of the Sawyer Pack.”
Chapter 38 summary: Jasper and Reed realise two things at the same time: that there are wolves from the Black Den coming out, and that Vail is in danger. They now put aside any differences they might have had for fear over Vail’s safety. As they go, Jasper senses that both the collar and tracker had been removed from her, since her “wolf side” that he can still sense is inside the school.
They run, and half of the school joins them as they go. However, when they get inside, they find out that they’re too late… but for the wrong reasons. They were too busy being worried about Denners, and not worried enough about the shitfucks inside their own school. Vail says that Callum already claimed her. Which was kind of a twist I didn’t see coming.

Chapter 29
At the sniff test, Cal had said she smelled like nothing. He’d been the one to proclaim her a dud, and since he had the best nose in the clan, I hadn’t argued with him. It was also one of the reasons I believed the lab report that said she was a void. When she’d come out as an omega, my dad’s theory was she’d had to hide her wolf so deep because of her human upbringing, and was only now able to let her shifter side rise to the surface. Which meant her wolf had to be tough. And maybe a hell of a lot stronger than anyone suspected.
Against all better judgement, I’m STILL waiting for the other shoe to drop in regards to Vail and her power.
“You had a reaction to the medicine they used. It made you sick. You remember that?”
I refuse to believe that it was the actual medicine that they used, and more the medical abuse they forced upon her.
“Whatever he does, it’ll be on me, not you. And I’ll make sure he knows my wolf and I are all in.”
Chapter 29 summary: Reed lies in bed with Vail while she sleeps. When she wakes up, he tells her briefly that she had a “bad reaction to the medication”, but I’m not sure if he even believes that. He gives her the food he ordered before she fell asleep.
Then she suggests that they go to the pools so that she can heal. But Callum is already there. He’s quick to call out the findings that Vail herself is an omega, and is still of the opinion that he was right about her after he did the sniff test, back in the start of the first novel: that she’s not only a dud, but a void. He also says that Reed’s father would sell his own son out for the, and I quote, “chance to sniff the Marrow Alpha”.
Reed and Vail drip all the way back to his room, since they wanted to get away from Callum as quickly as possible. Once in there, she asks him what it would be like for them to mate… Not the physical act, but the politics of it. Reed says that her grandfather would never allow for an arranged mate, but proposes a blood mating instead. That he’ll convince his two alpha friends to endorse the mating bond between them, so that it’s legitimate. That they’ll do it after the packball game this coming weekend, right in front of Jasper. Obviously, she’s worried about Jasper, but Reed says that any shit will fall onto Reed, not her.
Chapter 30
I shuddered at the memory of walking into the principal’s office and realizing I was about to relive one of my worst nightmares. “They did it early in the morning after our movie night. Jasper, Principal Bregman, a couple of the security guards. They were all in on it.”
Marnie shot forward on her seat with a cry. “What? Carter said he found you collapsed in the hall. He told me you were sick, but not because of that!”
I feel like his lying about it indicates that he knows, even if not subconsciously, that what they did to Vail was wrong. That if he tells others that he simply “found her sick and collapsed in the hall”, then maybe he himself would eventually come to believe it.
A man in his late twenties looked back at me, but he wasn’t what I was expecting. He had a slight build and sharp cheekbones, emphasized by his swept-back hair. I couldn’t tell what color it was, but in every picture his beautiful blue eyes were the centerpiece. He looked kind, and thoughtful, and nothing like me at all.
Let me guess: also not her bio-dad?
“You didn’t even warn me! Do you know what I thought when I walked into that office and saw the doctor there? All those medical instruments? And your asshole guards, holding me down? I thought it was going to be the same as the pack lab -.”
He screwed his hands into fists, and I saw golden fur gleaming at his wrists. “Never! I would never let anyone hurt you like that again.”
“What do you mean? You hurt me. With this!” I grabbed the collar at my throat, then turned to show him the scar behind my ear. “And this!”
Good. It’s about time that she finally grew a goddamned spine!!
“And the collar?” His face shuttered. “I know it doesn’t feel like it, but that’s for your protection.”
“What?” I gaped at him. “It didn’t protect me from Trey! Or from your goons shoving me face-first into that bench!”
He looked so furious, I expected his wolf to leap right out of his skin. “They’ll live to regret ever touching you.”
“It’s not enough.” I got my hands between us and wrenched myself free. “You can’t just say stuff like that and think it makes it all better.”
“That’s because you’re not listening to me!” He shook his head like he was as frustrated as I felt. “I’ve done it all to keep you safe!”
He complains that she’s not listening to him… Yet when she tells him of all of the shit that she’s been through BECAUSE OF HIS SHITTY ACTIONS, he shuts down and insists that this is “to protect her”.
“But don’t worry. I’m with Reed now, and he’s promised to do all that and more.”
Chapter 30 summary: In order to make people believe that the Reed/Vail relationship didn’t spring up out of nowhere, they have to let people see them, and for them to act like they’re totally in love.
Marnie comes to Reed’s room when he isn’t there. And Vail basically gets her to talk about how difficult it’s been to have been labelled as a dud for most of her life. Vail is obviously still angry about the way that the system is intentionally designed against the duds, and promises Marnie that she and Reed are going to change everything.
The next day, Vail goes to classes like usual. Reed walks her to each of her classes, and kisses her on the cheek at the door. In deportment, Reed ditches his own class so that he can be her dance partner.
During a break in cheer practice, Vail talks with Nadia. Nadia doesn’t believe for a second that Vail’s relationship with Reed is real, claiming that she’s known him forever. Then she complains about a stomachache, so she goes to sleep in Ms. Costa’s office. She wakes up to the teacher pulling out some photos of Parker West, her supposed bio-dad. However, Parker doesn’t look anything like Vail, but she takes the photos anyway.
Vail goes to the locker room, bracing herself for another encounter with Pearl. However, it’s instead Jasper who’s waiting for her. She’s quick to call him out on his abusive shit, although he insists that it was his mom who ordered the tracker to be put in Vail. Vail obviously doesn’t believe that, since the dude literally put the slave collar on her. Jasper insists that he’s going to take her to get the tracker cut out, but then the two of them start fighting about how he won’t remove the collar. That him promising to get the tracker out is an empty thing, seeing as how he won’t stop harassing her. She says that Reed is going to take care of it, because he’s actually a nice person who wants to be with her, regardless of her pack status.

Chapter 21
I left Liam watching Vail, because if there was one thing I knew for certain, my sweet thing ran when she felt cornered. And by intercepting her letter, I’d taken her one small attempt at freedom and shoved it back in her face.
Mm, I knew it was true love when he was literally keeping me prisoner! Look, he even gave me a slave collar to prove to others that I belonged to him!
SAID NOT ONE SINGLE GODDAMNED PERSON EVER!!
There weren’t many secrets a shifter could keep from his beast. But the fact the collar suppressed her wolf while also keeping the males away, was one I’d had to hide until it was safely in place. My wolf had known instantly, and while I’d been aching to lie beside her in the hotel bed, he was having none of it. He’d pushed through the shift, raking his claws over my balls in the process, and then slept beside her all night. While I’d been walking with a limp ever since, he seemed immune to the injury. As if his rage at my betrayal was blocking out the pain.
I hate this stupid “Dr. Jekkyl and Mr. Hyde” bullshit implying that the wolf part of every werewolf is somehow an individual.
It’s giving “multiple personality disorder” chic.
“You’ve got a rat in the bunker, big dog.”
[...]
“Two legs or four?”
You are literally a werewolf! Everybody around you has simultaneously 2 AND four legs!
“You can’t collar a wild thing, Jay. It’s always going to find a way out.”
Chapter 21 summary: The first four pages (half of the goddamned chapter) are literally nothing but Jasper moping about his situation with Vail. He wants to challenge the Marrow clan leader, but he knows that it would be suicidal.
He then finally tracks down Mr. Wentworth. The man explains that Marrow sponsored his visa in exchange for “news about any interesting wolves”. So there’s a fairly good chance that Marrow already knows about Vail. Anyway, Jasper wants info on what Marrow is like personally so that he can destroy the man. Wentworth tells him that Marrow’s filthy habit is to chuck omega males into the stables and… well. You can probably guess. Jasper is obviously interested to learn more about this, but this is a fade-to-black conversation.
Jasper goes for a run, and then goes back to his office. There, Callum tells him that he’s found something, and takes him over to basically a little doggie hiding hole. Jasper complains that it doesn’t smell like a wolf den, but Callum says that it’s a “wild dog”. I thought they meant it along the lines of a literal and perfectly ordinary stray dog. But then Callum mentions Trey, and how he’d shown up to take Vail home. But that Trey’s scent around this area is only from a few days, and it’s all around the forest, too.
Chapter 22
To say nothing of my freshman classmates, and their new game of Who can touch the radioactive female?
This is when you adopt your best kindergarten teacher voice and say “We keep our hands and our feet to ourselves, children!”
If they don’t want to be treated like a 5 year old, then maybe they shouldn’t act like one.
…and chicory coffee eyes, minus the sweetener…
That is… oddly specific. At this point, you might as well give a highly complex Starbucks order.
“In the wild, amongst those traditional wolf packs, the concept of submission doesn’t really apply. Why? Because the alpha and omega wolves co-dominate the pack. The simple reality is they are the parents of all the pups. And like your parents, they are both role models to their offspring. There are things your mothers give you that your fathers can’t, and vice versa.”
Friendly reminder that the scientist who coined the term “alpha wolf” literally spent the rest of his career trying to retract his original study. That things like “pack dynamics” (alpha, beta, omega) are only found in CAPTIVE wolves.
“Never freaking happening.” So much for positive influences.
Chapter 22 summary: Now it’s Vail’s time to mope for the opening of her chapter. Although at least her moping happened across several days. She meets back up again with Reed for her next self-defence lesson. He tries to explain to her that after your first shift, you retain some of the muscle-mass you had as a wolf. So experienced shifters, like Penny, are more bulky than somebody like Vail who has never shifted.
Later, Vail has biology class. The teacher says that there’s a special guest speaker, and to Vail’s surprise, it’s Alpha Turner. The man from the lab who was basically ordered to sexually assault her.
He talks about the dominant and submissive roles werewolves have to play when they live as civilised people. Part of it is kind of leaning into what I mentioned earlier: that wild wolf packs don’t have the alpha/beta/omega structures, and that it’s only wolves kept in captivity.
He goes on to explain about this Marrow ancestor named Nathaniel and his mate, Estelle. How the two of them drew strength from one another, and were able to defeat some enemy. Under the rule of Nathaniel, things evened out and became more civilised for werewolves. Even after they’d both died, things were better. However, Turner uses this as an example of a good alpha, and then throws an awful lot of shade towards Jasper basically throwing his weight around and calling it “leadership”.
After class, Vail thanks Turner for having helped her to get out of the lab. She wants to know more about what happened, but Turner says that everything is shut down because of the investigation. Jasper shows up then, and is angry that another alpha would openly touch his collared woman.
